Reading and Writing

During our reading time we will be embarking on the last level of the Fundations program.  This program teaches us about the way letters combine to make sounds, syllables, and words.  In third grade, we will review the six syllable types and learn more specific rules about combining those syllables with other syllables and with suffixes to make longer words.  We will also be learning sound-alike words (which and witch).  This is sure to improve both students' reading and writing.

Students will also spend a significant amount of time each day in Reading Workshop.  During this time students will be learning the skills and strategies of strong reading by participating in a minilesson, independent reading, partner work, and individual conferences with a teacher.  To begin the year an important focus of our work will be on choosing books that are Just Right.
